“From little date seeds, great things are born.”  – Ancient proverb

The fruit of the date palm tree, dates are an age-old staple and delicacy, wholesome in their caramel-like taste and are enjoyed eaten out of hand in their simplest form and as a tantalizing ingredient in dishes both sweet and savory.

The date is botanically identified as a “drupe” (single-pitted) fruit from the Phoenix dactylifera tree of the palm family.  Evidence suggests its cultivation as far back as 7000 BCE, near the banks of the Nile and Euphrates rivers of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, where dates have remained a staple food – and part of cultural traditions — ever since. The date palm offered its earliest cultivators “three-hundred-and sixty” uses, including needles, thread, lumber, mattresses, rope, and baskets as well as food and beverage.  Through the centuries, traders spread dates throughout South West Asia, northern Africa, and Spain, whose settlers introduced them into Mexico and California in 1765.  Today, dates — especially Medjool and Deglet Noor — are cultivated extensively in Mexico’s states of Sonora and Baja California, and in the United States in Arizona, southern Florida and in California’s Coachella Valley – the agriculturally bountiful home of Morgan’s in the desert — where they thrive with their “feet in the water and heads in the sun.

Rich with flavor, dates are also nutritionally rich in dietary fiber, iron, potassium; in minerals like calcium, manganese, copper, and magnesium; and with phytonutrients and polyphenols, all of which are key contributors to growth, development, and general well-being.  Dates are free of saturated fat, trans fat, sodium, and cholesterol.

We invite you to join Chef Jae Ho Bang for a very special seasonal menu celebrating the date with exciting, original flavors, textures and platings that are sure to be an unforgettable autumn dining experience.
